🌟 What P7 Has Been Learning This Term! 🌟

28th Nov 2025
Our Primary 7 pupils have had an incredible term packed with exciting learning experiences across the curriculum. Here’s a snapshot of what they’ve been up to:
✅ Literacy
P7 thoroughly enjoyed diving into their class novel Under the Hawthorn Tree, which linked perfectly to their topic on the Great Irish Famine. Through the story, pupils explored themes of resilience, family, and survival, while developing comprehension skills and discussing historical context. They also delved into poetry, studying Seamus Heaney’s evocative poem Blackberry Picking and learning how poets use imagery and language to create mood and meaning. Inspired by this, pupils crafted their own diamante poems, experimenting with structure and vocabulary to express ideas creatively. To make learning hands on, the children went blackberry picking themselves, experiencing the sights and smells described in the poem. They then celebrated their efforts by making jam and enjoying it with crackers, a memorable activity that brought the literature to life!
✅ Numeracy
This term, pupils have tackled a wide range of mathematical concepts. They explored fractions, percentages, and decimals, learning how these link together and apply to real-life situations. P7 also strengthened their understanding of place value, rounding, and long multiplication, ensuring accuracy and confidence with larger numbers.
In shape and space, they investigated symmetry, angles, and properties of 2D and 3D shapes, while in data handling, they created and interpreted charts and graphs. Problem-solving was a key focus throughout, encouraging pupils to apply reasoning skills in practical investigations and collaborative challenges. These activities helped strengthen logical thinking and prepare them for the transition to post-primary mathematics.
✅ World Around Us
Our topic this term was the Great Irish Famine, a pivotal event in Irish history. Pupils explored its causes and devastating impact on communities, gaining insight into how it shaped Ireland’s past. They investigated the potato blight and how it led to widespread hunger, examined the harsh realities of life in workhouses, and learned about emigration, where families faced difficult journeys in search of a better life. Children also studied soup kitchens, relief efforts, and the role of landlords during this period, discussing the social and economic challenges faced by ordinary people. Through research, group projects, and class debates, pupils developed empathy and a deeper understanding of the resilience shown by those who lived through this tragedy. This topic not only enhanced historical knowledge but also encouraged critical thinking about fairness, survival, and community.
✅ ICT
To complement their WAU learning, pupils used Adobe Express to design eye-catching infographics about the Great Irish Famine, combining historical knowledge with digital creativity and presentation skills. They also used Just2Easy software to create famine population line graphs, helping them visualize the dramatic changes over time. In addition, pupils explored AI tools to design alternative Under the Hawthorn Tree book covers, complete with their own blurbs summarising the story. To showcase their understanding, they created presentation videos using Adobe Express, blending video clips, audio narration, text, and graphics into immersive summaries of everything they had learned ab
out the famine.
✅ PE
This term in PE, P7 focused on Games and Gymnastics, developing key skills such as balance, coordination, and control. In Games, pupils worked on passing, movement, and teamwork through small-sided activities and competitive challenges. In Gymnastics, they explored sequences, rolls, and balances, building confidence and creativity while improving flexibility and strength.
✅ Art & Design
Creativity shone through as pupils produced beautiful artwork linked to the famine, using different techniques to express emotion and tell stories visually.
✅ Personal Development
This year, we’ve embraced the Nurture in 5 programme, which P7 have really bought into and enjoyed. They’ve reflected on resilience, friendships, and began preparing for their next big step to post-primary school. Our P7 pupils have also led by example through the Playground Friends initiative, promoting fun and inclusive play for everyone across the school. They’ve truly shown what leadership looks like!
We are so proud of their hard work, creativity, and enthusiasm. 🎉 Check out the photos attached to see some of the amazing highlights from this term!
