Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship at Holy Trinity Primary School

At Holy Trinity, digital citizenship is a key part of how we prepare children to live, learn and thrive in an increasingly digital world. Digital citizenship means using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly – both online and offline – while understanding that our choices have a real impact on ourselves and others.

Across Nursery to Primary 7, pupils take part in age‑appropriate digital citizenship lessons based on the Common Sense Education “Digital Citizens” programme. Through engaging stories, characters and discussions, children learn that being a good digital citizen is about balancing screen time, showing kindness, thinking critically and keeping themselves safe.

The Digital Citizens help children understand:

  • Healthy media habits – learning how to balance screen time and make positive choices when using technology
  • Online kindness and respect – recognising cyberbullying, understanding the power of words and knowing how to seek help
  • Relationships and communication – building respectful online relationships and understanding how digital actions affect others
  • Media and information literacy – thinking critically about what they see online, spotting misinformation and giving credit to others’ work
  • Privacy and security – protecting personal information, using strong passwords and understanding online safety
  • Digital footprint and identity – recognising that online actions leave a trail and learning how to present themselves positively online

These lessons are taught progressively, building children’s understanding and confidence year by year. Alongside classroom learning, we also encourage strong home–school partnerships by sharing guidance and resources with families to support safe and healthy technology use at home.

By the time our pupils leave Holy Trinity, we aim for them to be confident, thoughtful and responsible digital citizens who know how to use technology in ways that support their wellbeing, learning and relationships.
